Save money with preventative maintenance.

Owning a car has always been a distinct symbol of American independence. The reality of it, is that it is also an expensive one. Owning and operating a vehicle in an urban area will cost drivers $6,758 to $11,239 in 2011 according to AAA. Performing regular scheduled maintenance, such as oil changes,  on your vehicle can help keep repair costs down. The following is a summary of the list published by the  Washington Post of Do’s and Don’ts of car maintenance.

1. Follow the maintenance schedule in your vehicles owner manual.
2. If your vehicle calls for Synthetic, use the best fully synthetic oil you can find. Check out our coupon page for $15 off a full synthetic Signature Service Oil Change.
3. Check your tire pressure. You’ll get slightly better gas mileage, better handling and longer tire life.  This service is included with any Signature Service Oil Change.
4. Tighten your gas cap. Really, gas evaporates.

Gas saving tips.

With gas prices continuing to rise and summer travel plans fast approaching the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence has published an easy to follow list of tips to help conserve fuel and make sure your vehicle gets the best mileage possible.

Monitor tires. Under-inflated tires or poorly aligned wheels waste fuel by forcing the engine to work harder.

Remove excess weight. Remove unnecessary items from the vehicle. Less weight means better mileage.

Consolidate trips and errands. Also, try to travel when traffic is light so you can avoid stop-and-go conditions.

Keep your engine “tuned up.” Replace filters and fluids as recommended; have engine performance problems (rough idling, poor acceleration, etc.) corrected. Given today’s high-tech engines, it’s wise to have this type of work done by automobile technicians who are ASE certified in engine performance.

Use windows and air conditioning wisely. Keep windows up at highway speeds to reduce air drag. This is true even with the air conditioning on. But turn off the A/C in stop-and-go traffic to save fuel.

Avoid excessive idling. Shut off the engine while waiting for friends and family.

Observe speed limits. Speeding decreases your miles per gallon.

Drive gently. Sudden accelerations guzzle gas. Anticipate traffic patterns ahead and adjust your speed gradually.

Additionally, keeping your vehicle well maintained with fresh oil and other fluids, is one of the best ways to improved gas mileage. Keeping Your Vehicle Maintained Can Save You Money

As the average price of gas edges towards the $4.00 some people see cutting  back on preventative maintenance as a cost saving measure .  This is disturbing trend, as these relatively low cost maintenance operations can save thousands later on.

From the original article: “They let their air filters go, they don’t change out their transmission fluid,” says Amber Dearing, who works at Lawson’s Auto Repair Shop in Elkton. “You’re talking about spending $2,000 for a transmission. Once the fluid starts getting to the point where it’s going to slip, it’s past the point of no return.”

Your local New Mexico, Northern Arizona, and Southern Colorado Jiffy Lube wants to help you continue to maintain their vehicles, despite the rise in gas prices. Check out the Jiffy Lube Coupons page for savings on preventative maintenance.

Get ready for summer with a radiator and coolant check!

Summer is just around the corner and that means longer days and hotter weather and severe driving conditions. Get your car ready for summer now, so you can enjoy carefree driving. Summer heat punishes your car. Your engine has to work even harder to stay cool and that means your car needs to be in top shape.

Oil lubricates the moving parts of the engine, reducing the heat generated by reducing friction. Engine coolant (antifreeze) circulates throughout the engine to draw away the heat that is generated. When your engine is properly lubricated and cooled it runs smoothly and allows you to get on your way, so get into your local Jiffy Lube today. In addition to a Signature Service Oil Change, Jiffy Lube also offers radiator services.

Our radiator service includes:

• visually checking the radiator and radiator hoses for leaks
• evacuating the old antifreeze/coolant
• refilling the cooling system with the appropriate type and amount of antifreeze/coolant

Summer Driving Tips

Spring is here and summer is on the way. Get ready for your summer adventures with some Summer Driving Tips from the guys  at Car Talk.

Here are some highlights:

  1. Make sure your radiator is in good shape. The radiator is essential to keeping your engine running cool. Jiffy Lube offers radiator service including flushing your system and filling it with the appropriate type and amount of coolant.
  2. Check your tire pressure, or let us do it during your next Jiffy Lube  Signature Service Oil Change. Tire pressure increases with temperature.  So if your tires were last filled in the cold they could be overinflated for the summer. Overinflated tires are not only bad for your vehicle’s handling  but are unsafe as well.
  3. Have your steering and suspension checked. Winter can wash away the lubricants that keep these systems working properly. Your local Jiffy Lube technicians will lubricate your chassis as needed as a standard part of any Signature Service Oil Change .
  4. Get your oil changed. Summer is the most important time to keep your engine cool. Fresh oil reduces the friction in your engine allowing it to run smooth and cool.
  5. Check your air conditioning system. Make sure you’re A/C blows cold. If it doesn’t, get it fixed before you head out on vacation.
  6. Have your transmission checked and serviced. Heat is hard on your transmission. Your local Jiffy Lube can drain and fill your standard or automatic transmission to ensure that it shifts smoothly and reduce the risk of failure when the temperatures rise.

From the Experts: Oil Changes – the best thing for your car

The experts over at NASCAR have published a great refresher on why oil changes are the single most important thing you can do for your vehicle.

“In addition to lubricating an engine’s moving parts, motor oil is designed to carry combustion by-products away from the pistons and cylinders. It is designed to deal with the small amounts of water that form as the engine heats and cools, and to collect the dirt and dust that enter the engine through the air-intake system. It also handles acids that are formed by the reaction between water and other contaminants. “

Come in today for a Jiffy Lube Signature Service Oil Change, the best thing you can do for your vehicle.

We can even replace them while your car is receiving a Jiffy Lube Signature Service Oil Change.

Rock Chip Repair

A chip in your windshield, if left unrepaired, will cause the windshield to crack. Avoid having to replace the entire windshield and get any chips repaired right away. Jiffy Lube offers rock chip repair and it only takes about 15 minutes. Insurance companies usually cover all costs of the repair and we will handle all the paperwork for you. We can complete this simple repair while you are receiving a Jiffy Lube Signature Oil Change, or you can come on in just for the repair. No appointment needed.

Maintenance Tip: Air Filters

Oil isn’t the only thing in a car that needs changing. To keep your car in top running shape, your car’s air filter requires regular replacement as well. A dirty air filter can limit the air flow to your car’s engine, which can cause a decrease in mileage and performance.

Jiffy Lube will inspect your air filter whenever you come in for a Signature Service Oil Change. If your filter needs to be changed, we’ll let you know and you can drive away knowing your engine can breathe easy.
